Hi All,

I need to replace two of my lav sinks. They are
cast iron ovals and have starting rusting.

I hear plastic cracks if something heavy falls on
them. I do not mind stainless, but they seem to
be extremely expensive.

What are my non-cast iron options?

Many thanks,
-T

Stainless is great for kitchens, looks too industrial for lavatory.

Vitreous China is probably the most common. That is all we had in three
houses over 58 years. Price is reasonable

We favor integral sink and countertop made from some sort of composite.

"cultured granite" was common - basically like "solid surface"
countertops - or Corian

I think that's what I have and 2 of 3 have spots of the white stuff
missing, and a little rust underneath. I never dropped anything into
them. OTOH, after 46 years the bathtub is still good as new. I guess
they are made differently.

I thought about that, but my friends convinced me it would be bad for my
ego for the other party to be cultured, and me, me.

That is what I have in the two bathrooms and one of the powder rooms and
I do like that they are integral.

Usual binding resins are acrylic or polyester. I am very familiar with
Corian which is acrylic with alumina filler plus colored particles and
the like for appearance. The sinks are made by injection molding but
countertops are a continuous process. I have even seen a Corian bath
tub but these were not marketed as they were non profitable. I am also
familiar with the Corian repair resins which can restore a damaged
product like new.

I have plastic, i.e. composite, in one half bathroom and ceramic in
another. Both nearly 50 years old and no problems. I would imagine
ceramic would break more easily but who would bring something heavy into
a powder room. Also have plastic in the two full bath rooms. Only
problem is slight staining where wife has left a wet wipe on it for
years. Probably polyester which would do this and acrylic like Corian
should be better.

Good on ya. I was about to question whether cast iron was even
used any more - sure enough - numerous models !

Kitchen sinks vs bathroom sinks materials
are apples & oranges in my life .. stainless steel only
for the kitchen - where people wash the heavy cookware ..
There's nothing that I'm likely to drop into my bathroom sink
that would damage it.
