Politics. Kill filter helps.
I've added a bit to it myself so not casting stones, at least not big ones.

We had a bit post election that was picking up but they got drowned
out. I too am kicking up the kill filter here (called 'bozo bin' in
Xananews). The sad thing is if any of them have a genuine on topic
question, I'll not see it.

We should take the rule to not answer to them. Then they will get bored

Not sure about that. They post to other wacko and sicko groups and
it's no effort at all to add ours.

Nobody repairs their own house. People on Usenet are too old;
young people are on social media. Plus, young people are a
couple of generations away from learning anything practical
from their (usually) fathers.

I got the strangest look from the mechanical inspector for my
mother's furnace installation when he said the vent was too close
to a stud and I said, "Dang. I should have brought my Sawzall."

He recommended I get the outfit that installed the furnace to come
make good. They came, and the vent was still a half inch too close
to the stud, so I ended up wielding my Sawzall anyway. (It was
the jack stud for a piddly 24-inch door opening, so I wasn't
worried about carving off a slice along one corner.)

Huh?

I'm old and do repairs all the time.

I won't post here to ask questions though. Not until I see civil
discussion come back.

I'm only reading here to remind myself how disgusting some people are.

You must be talking about Liz Cheney, the J6 committee member who is alleged to have destroyed evidence?

I'll bet Joe pardons the whole scammittee team. Disgusting!

Speak for yourself. I put the studded tires on Saturday and I don't mean
that I loaded them in the car and drove to a tire shop. The last home
repair I did was this spring when I fixed a couple of roof leaks. Does
that count?

I suppose the day is coming but it ain't here yet.

My house is six years old so not much to do. I have limits now though.
One step on the step ladder these days.

My son came over to change the batteries in the smoke detectors.
Ceilings are 9'4", a bit of a reach.

I did change the water filter in the fridge though. I pay for the lawn
care.

I spent yesterday (Sunday) morning snaking logs out of a tangled mess
and cutting them to stove length then loading them on my trailer . This
morning I unloaded it after I divided Saturday's meat purchases into
serving size portions and bagging/freezing it . Tomorrow I expect to
start loading a couple of downed trees that are over on the west side of
our property that I cut to stove lengths a few weeks ago . Big trees ,
they'll need to be split - today's wood was small enough to not need
splitting .

I am not up to doing too much around the house this winter. No
shovelling or blowing snow. No lifting anything over about 8 lbs. No
twisting or bending for a while.
Thankfully the spinal fusion surgery went well and pain has not been
an issue.
Hopefully by spring I will be pretty much back to "normal" - whatever
that endsup being - - -

I've been lucky enough to avoid the knife ... though it's going to be
just a matter of time until I have to have something done about a disk
or two in my neck . I've read about a procedure that involves injecting
some kind of urethane or similar compound to build up a worn disk .
Hopefully when I can no longer put it off I can have a procedure that's
minimally invasive , maybe laparoscopic repairs .

I had pinched nerve in neck and had two bouts of physical therapy over
the years. I was able to avoid surgery and problem is essentially gone.
Look at exercises on line that may help. I also avoid lifting things
over my head.

My wife had the same problem and surgeon wanted to operate but she
refused and recovered fine.

Spinal surgeries that fuse vertebra can result in need for more as
stress goes to rest of spine.

As for AHR, Ed sounds like me. I have the knowledge and the tools but
abilities are not working as well. I had an 81 year old neighbor
suffering missing teeth when he fell off a ladder and a 75 year old get
killed when he went to bring down a partially fallen tree.

Mine's a gas powered hydraulic unit . Relatively light unit at 12
tons , but it suffices for my use . It's meant to be able to tow into
the woods to split where it fell , but I seldom take it out of the
woodlot . Later this week I'll be loading up some stuff I cut a few
weeks ago . It will need to be split ... because it's on the other side
of the property I'll be hauling out of the woods with the yard tractor
and transferring to the 5x8 utility trailer for the trip home . That
utility trailer has an electric winch powered pivoting jib crane so I
only have to physically lift big/heavy pieces once . Once they're in the
small yard trailer I use "labor saving devices" to handle it until it
gets stacked .

I'm 79. Just went up to the second story on an extension ladder
to hang an XMAS wreath. It looks great up there.

A while ago I changed the whole house water filter, that turned out to
be way harder than I thought it would be. A gorilla must have done the
last change. I ended up heating the top part with a heat gun to get the
thing loose.

There is nothing better than weight lifting to stay in good shape.

Changing whole house water filter is last thing I did. No problem but I
did discover once not to grease the o-ring as it swelled. Fortunately
heat gun shrunk it.

I have a second much larger iron filter unchanged now because I cannot
get it off.

Ceiling light bulb and smoke detectors can be a PITA for us elders.
Last smoke alarm I replaced, I put high on the wall. They do not need
to go to ceiling. Same for CO detector.

I got the strangest look from the mechanical inspector for my

How dare you install an 80% furnace!

A true liberal Democrat would install a >92% high-efficiency furnace.
Those 80% units cause climate change.

Truth be told, a true believer would install a heat pump.
