Montana has open primaries. This year there were four ballots, Republican,
Democrat, Green, and Libertarian. Pick one, fill it out, and discard the
rest. afaik you can't 'register as an Independent' or any other party
affiliation, you just register to vote.

It's moot for presidential candidates since the primary is in June and the
nominee is usually a done deal by then. Obama vs. Clinton was the last
time I remember them still scrambling for votes in June.
